Windsurfing Areas

Two most popular landing spots in the channel on Peljesac coast are small horns with long pebble beaches; Sv. Liberan and Zamosce. Both spots are good for all wins in the channel. On Korcula coast best spot for all winds is small beach about 50 meters east of wave breaker Puntin. Puntin protect from bura and easterly winds western pier of old Korcula town. Along the Peljesac coast of the channel are numerous small pebble beaches which can be used as alternative landing spots. On Korcula coast there are only few such places.

W.S.Area - Zamosce

Zamosce is settlement located in bay east of Kuciste. Bay is closed from east with small horn Rt. Zamosce.  Rt. Zamosce is perfect landing spot for all winds and complete bay is good landing spot for westerly winds. Pebble beach extends from middle of bay till horn, in length of about 250 meters and continues behind horn. Total length of beach is about 500 meters. In beginning, in the middle of bay, beach is wide only few meters and toward horn becoming wider. Submerged part of beach is wide about 10 meters. On border, between beach and sea grass depth is about 2 meters and average depth in bay is 3-6 meters. For westerly winds complete beach is perfect for beach start. Weak easterly wind blows during summer, almost every morning till noon. Often, this kind of wind lasts several days, especially in August. Those conditions are good for beginners. For beginners, handling with equipment could be difficult because of depth in bay, and standing on bottom is not possible. In the bay are numerous mooring buoys and protected area for swimmers, therefore approaching the beach with full speed is not safe. In westerly winds beach, usually, is not crowded with swimmers, only with surf equipment. For easterly winds horn should be preferred, especially for sinking boards; walking with equipment along the beach 200 meters is not big deal. Starting from bay in easterlies is possible only with rope, and it’s not possible in lebic and bura. As I mentioned above, horn is good for starting in all winds, including bura and lebic.

Horn is (more or less) clear of boats, but care should be taken on current (1-2 knots) (in bay current is less than 05.knots) and sea urchins (bay is clear of them). 40 meters from top of horn toward bay is small pier, submerged during high tide, and could be dangerous for fin. Except this pier, beach is clear of rocks, reefs etc. in whole its length. About 25 meters from horn (toward open sea) is bottom depression, and about 40 meters from horn depth is already 30-35 meters. On part of beach east of horn are also numerous sea urchins, but current is less then on the horn (less than 1 knot). Turning area for westerly winds with smaller waves is east of horn. An easterly winds creates west of horn belt wide only 30-50 meters with small waves with good wind. From this belt toward middle of channel waves are higher, and from belt toward beach first is zone with gusts and close to the beach is windless zone.

W.S.Area - S. Liberan (Viganj)

Viganj – Sv. Liberan is similar spot as Zamosce. Village Viganj is situated in Viganj bay, closed from east with horn Sv. Liberan. Name of horn (Sv. Liberan – Saint Liberan) is name of small chapel on it. Sv. Liberan is more popular spot than Zamosce due to less choppy water in maestral, its perfect for race windsurfing. Characteristics of beach are similar as in Zamosce. Uninterrupted beach starts in Viganj bay on west, over horn, to 200 meters east of horn. Length of this beach is about 500 meters. Rest of the beach, further east is interrupted with piers for boats, but still good as landing area. Beach ends with rocks; this is beginning of another horn Rat. Small horn Rat belongs to Kuciste (Kuciste bay is protected from west with this horn). This is a rocky horn and it’s not suitable for windsurfing.

From horn Rat to first piers in Kuciste is beach. Length of this beach is about 200 meters, and average width is 3-5 meters. Beach is protected from westerly winds. Easterly winds blow on this beach as on-shore winds, but still can be used as alternative windsurfing spot. For lebic and bura this is good landing spot.

Viganj bay is much wider than Zamosce, therefore everywhere in bay blows westerly winds wind same force. Bit more protected is eastern part of bay from easterly winds. In this case horn is recommended as landing spot. Eastern part of bay is perfect turning area for easterly winds with smaller waves. Horn has access from main road. Around horn are several camps, café bars, restaurant etc.

W.S.Area Puntin - Korcula

Old Korcula town is located on small peninsula which extends toward middle of channel. North point of peninsula is well exposed to all winds, but town is surrounded by high wall and below wall are rocks, therefore is not comfortable as windsurfing landing spot, except one small beach on point on its west part. This area is called Puntin – lighthouse and wave breaker. This small beach with length of 50 meters is good landing spot for all winds, and I think single landing spot on south part of channel, on Korcula coast. Submerged part of beach is about 10 meters wide, and it has good access from road.

Equipment

In the channel calm is rare. Usually during the summer, in the morning blows light eastern wind – Sirocco or levant. Sometimes this wind blows several days and it’s not so popular among windsurfers. Therefore for these conditions you need to have wide style race or freeride board (more than 150 lit) with sails of at least 8.0 square meters. Most of maestral conditions 5-6 Bf. are covered with freeride or freestyle board with 100-120 lit. and sail from 6.0 to 7.0 square meters. Smaller sails (5.0-6.0 sq. meters) are recommended during June and July. Wave equipment; sails of less than 5 square meters and boards of less than 90 liters, if you are lucky, you will use it few times.
